Glossary - Microtia and pinna reconstruction

Microtia – Partial congenital deformity of the pinna

Anuta – Complete congenital deformity of the pinna

Atresia of the external auditory canal - Closure of the external ear canal

Synthetic prosthesis - A coin shaped substitute for the pinna made of silicon material.

Rib cartilage for pinna reconstruction - The anterior part of the same lateral side ribs 6,7,8,9 which is made of cartilage.

BAHA - Hearing aid which is based on the vibration of the skull bone and is implanted onto the skull with a screw.

BAHA Soft Band – similar to the hearing aid that is based on the vibration of the skull bone, but this device is coupled to the skull by means of a soft band and does not require surgery.

Syndrome – An association of several unusual clinically recognized signs that together point to a medical condition of the patient, in such cases the doctor knows which other conditions to look for in the patient.

Lobule type microtia – Is a microtia in which the concave formation around the external auditory canal of the pinna cannot be identified.

Conha type microtia - Is a microtia in which the concave formation around the external auditory canal of the pinna can be identified.

Hemifacial microsomia – A congenital disorder that affects the development of the lower half of the face; usually the ears, the mouth and the jaw. It can affect one- or the two- sides of the face. It is the second most common face defect after cleft lip and palate.

Godnhar Syndrome - Is also known as Oculo-Auriculo Syndrome (OAV). It is a rare birth defect characterized by structural damage to the face, which involves the external and the middle ear, the nose, the lips, the soft palate, and the mandible. Often, flaps of skin can be observed between the ear and the corner of the mouse of the same side.
