The pinna starts to develop on the embryo neck at the fifth week of gestation, and migrates to its final location no later than week 20.

Some syndromes and anomalies are known to be associated with microtia.

The cause for microtia as a singular defect has been studied extensively, however no proven cause for its occurrence was found. Notwithstanding, there are several theories for the reasons for its appearance which include: Deficiency in blood supply during pregnancy. Medication taken during pregnancy such as Thalidomide, Accutane and retinoic acid. In addition, several environmental factors were explored.
